The Cape Town International Jazz Festival Sustainable Training and Development (Music Business workshop) left every person who attended this workshop full of knowledge regrading the business side of music.
The greatest highlight of this workshop has to be the introduction of Southern African Music Rights Organisation popularly known as SAMRO. It is a copyright asset management society. It was established by the South African Copyright Act, and aims to protect the intellectual property of music creators by licensing music users
Here are some steps which one could follow in order to become a member of SAMRO:
- Download and complete the membership application form.
- Complete the Notification of Works form that lets us know which works you’re claiming ownership of.
- Provide them with the Deed of Assignment.
- Give them a copy of the recording you wish to claim ownership of.
- Give them proof of identity in the form of a certified copy of your ID document.
- Next is Nominee Interim Membership. You get this when your song has played enough times and you’ve earned enough royalties.
You have all you need now don't be scared to go out there and start pursuing a career in music.
